PM Modi congratulates Gold medallist Harvinder
New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has extended his heartfelt congratulations to Harvinder Singh for clinching a historic gold medal in archery at the Paralympic Games in Paris on Wednesday. Singh’s victory marks a groundbreaking achievement as he becomes the first Indian archer to secure a gold medal at the Paralympics, following his bronze medal win at the Tokyo 2020 Games.
In the gold medal match, Harvinder Singh showcased remarkable skill and determination by defeating Poland’s Lukasz Ciszek 6-0. Singh’s dominant performance in the final was marked by a decisive first-set victory of 28-24, and he maintained his lead with impressive shots, including two nines and a perfect ten in the second set.
Prime Minister Modi took to social media to celebrate Singh’s achievement, stating, “A very special gold in Para Archery! Congratulations to Harvinder Singh for winning the Gold medal in the Men’s Individual Recurve Open at the #Paralympics2024! His precision, focus, and unwavering spirit are outstanding. India is very happy with his accomplishment.”
Harvinder Singh, hailing from Ajit Nagar village in Haryana’s Kaithal district, comes from a farming family. His journey to greatness is particularly inspiring; at just one and a half years old, Singh suffered severe side effects from dengue treatment that led to a loss of function in his legs. Despite this significant challenge, he discovered a passion for archery by watching the London Paralympics in 2012, which propelled him towards a successful career in the sport. Singh’s story is a testament to overcoming adversity and excelling against the odds, further cementing his place as a pioneering figure in Indian Paralympic history.
