Woman, Infant Die in Cuttack After Alleged Dowry Harassment

Cuttack: A woman and her three-month-old infant died on Wednesday while undergoing treatment after an alleged suicide attempt in Atoda village under Jagatpur police limits, Cuttack district.

The woman, identified as Suchismita, reportedly poured kerosene on herself and her infant daughter on Tuesday evening due to ongoing family disputes. She locked herself inside her house before attempting the act. Both were rushed to different hospitals-Suchismita to a private hospital and her infant to a NICU-but succumbed to their injuries during treatment.

Police have detained Suchismita’s husband and launched an investigation. The victim’s family has accused her in-laws of torturing her for dowry, alleging frequent domestic conflicts.

Suchismita was married two years ago, and her family claims she endured continuous harassment.

An inquiry is underway to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the incident.
