Woman Consumes Poison at Nayagarh Police Station Over Inaction

Nayagarh: In a shocking incident, a young woman consumed poison at the premises of the Itamati police station in Odisha’s Nayagarh district on Monday, allegedly in protest against police inaction on her complaint.
According to sources, the woman had filed a complaint on Sunday against a youth with whom she had been in a relationship. Her complaint reportedly came as a counter-allegation after the youth’s family had lodged an FIR accusing her brother of forcibly entering their home and issuing threats.
Police said the woman had earlier accused the same youth of rape in February this year, following which he was arrested and sent to judicial custody. He was later released on bail after 15 days. Since then, the situation between the two families has remained tense.
On Monday, while police officers were speaking to her about the latest complaint, the woman briefly stepped out of the room and returned moments later claiming she had consumed poison. She was immediately rushed to the Nayagarh District Headquarters Hospital, where her condition is said to be stable.
Her mother, who was present at the police station, alleged that the police were dismissive of her daughter’s complaint. She claimed officials cited CCTV footage from the youth’s house as evidence supporting the family’s version of events against the woman’s brother.
Police have confirmed that an investigation is underway to determine the full circumstances of the incident.
