White Tiger Cub Dies at Nandankanan Zoo

Bhubaneswar: The Royal Bengal Tiger population at Nandankanan Zoological Park has decreased to 27 following the death of a white tiger cub this morning.

Zoo officials reported that the female cub had been unwell since January 12, displaying lethargy, lack of appetite, and separation from its mother. Initial surveillance through CCTV revealed unusual behavior, prompting immediate veterinary intervention.

The cub was found to have an elevated body temperature and was transferred to the zoo’s veterinary hospital. Comprehensive diagnostic tests, including blood and fecal analysis, were conducted. Experts from the Centre for Wildlife Health (CWH) recommended intensive care involving IV fluids, plasma expanders, antibiotics, antacids, and anticonvulsants. Despite these efforts, the cub refused to eat and failed to recover, succumbing to its illness this morning.

The cub was one of four born to white tigress Rupa and melanistic tiger Krishna on November 2, 2024. The cubs had been under constant maternal care and were monitored through CCTV.

With this loss, Nandankanan Zoo’s tiger population now comprises 14 males, 10 females, and three cubs whose sexes are yet to be determined.
