Vedanta to Set Up Rs 40,991-Crore Aluminium Smelter in Odisha’s Rayagada

Rayagada: In a major step toward boosting India’s aluminium production capabilities, Vedanta Ltd is set to establish a state-of-the-art greenfield aluminium smelter in Odisha’s Rayagada district. The project, with an investment of Rs 40,991 crore, has received formal approval from the Odisha government’s High-Level Clearance Authority (HLCA).
The 1.2 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) smelter is expected to generate around 7,200 direct and indirect jobs, significantly contributing to the state’s industrial growth. It is part of Vedanta’s larger dual investment plan of Rs 91,528 crore in Rayagada, which also includes a proposed 6 MTPA alumina refinery.
A High-Tech Facility with Global Aspirations
The upcoming smelter will produce high-quality aluminium for a wide range of industries including automotive, aerospace, construction, packaging, and electronics. The facility aims to position India as a competitive player in the global aluminium market.
Modern Operations and Sustainable Approach
The smelter will process alumina sourced from Vedanta’s upcoming refinery in the same district. Using the Hall-Héroult process, the plant will extract aluminium through electrolysis after dissolving alumina in molten cryolite. The refined metal will then be cast into ingots, billets, and sheets for industrial use.
To ensure sustainable operations, Vedanta plans to integrate energy-efficient technologies, renewable energy inputs, carbon capture mechanisms, and advanced waste recycling systems into the facility.
This ambitious project marks a significant milestone in Odisha’s journey toward becoming a hub for high-end industrial and manufacturing activities.
