Uphill task for AAP, Kejriwal to woo voters in Delhi poll !

Bhubaneswar: The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) which is vying for a third consecutive term has several things to take care of during the campaign for the Assembly polls.

Its strong opponent — the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)– is determined to capitalise on an anti-incumbency wave and corruption charges to unseat it.

Kejriwal, undoubtedly one of the most prominent political figures in Delhi, has maintained power for a decade, largely due to popular schemes like power, water, and bus subsidies that resonate well with the voters.

These initiatives have undeniably fortified the AAP’s rapport with the urban population, strengthening its governance narrative.

The strengths of the AAP are the popular welfare schemes, new promises for the voters and focussed campaigning.

AAP’s flagship initiatives, such as the rejuvenation of government schools, mohalla clinics, free electricity, free bus travel for women, and free pilgrimage for senior citizens, remain key strengths.

These schemes appear to have resonated with voters, particularly from economically weaker sections.

The party has announced ambitious schemes, including a monthly allowance of ₹2100 for women, free healthcare for the elderly, and ₹10 lakh insurance for auto drivers.

These promises aim to broaden AAP’s appeal and could prove decisive in swaying voter sentiment.

Through initiatives like ‘Rewadi par Charcha’, AAP is reaching out to every household, reiterating its achievements and plans. This direct engagement with voters could strengthen its grassroots connection.

However, the party is haunted by the anti-incumbency factor.

After a decade in power, AAP faces a significant anti-incumbency wave. Many voters express a desire for change, which could affect Arvind Kejriwal’s chances of retaining power.

Allegations of corruption have tainted the AAP’s leadership, particularly concerning the excise policy. Local discontent has also surged due to unpopular MLAs, necessitating a massive overhaul in candidate selection. The party’s failure to meet several critical promises, such as cleaning the Yamuna, ensuring adequate water supply, and improving sanitation and infrastructure, further clouds its achievements. Moreover, there is a notable deficiency in investment concerning both urban and rural infrastructure, which remains a point of contention.

The high-profile arrests of party leaders, including Kejriwal and Manish Sisodia, on corruption charges have dented the party’s clean image. Internal rifts have led to several leaders leaving the party, further weakening its position.

The Sheesh Mahal controversy, concerning the alleged opulence of Kejriwal’s residence, has provided ammunition for the BJP’s aggressive campaign and tarnished the party’s pro-people image.

The party has opportunity to reconnecting with voters during the campaigning with its voter base.

By highlighting its achievements and fielding a mix of experienced and new candidates, the party could strengthen its appeal.

AAP can emphasise its governance model, which has been praised in various sectors. Distancing itself from failed national alliances and focusing solely on Delhi’s issues may help regain voter trust. If Kejriwal successfully addresses internal challenges and external criticism, he could emerge as a stronger leader, bolstering both his and the party’s credibility on a national scale.

the AAP has significant opportunities. With the opposition, the Congress and the BJP burdened by weak leadership choices, the AAP has a plausible path to securing a third consecutive term. Such a victory would not only enhance its standing as a formidable local force but also strengthen its position as an emerging national opposition, one that has managed to keep the BJP at bay in Delhi despite its repeated victories in the Lok Sabha elections.

The BJP remains AAP’s biggest rival, leveraging its strong propaganda machinery, high-profile campaigners like Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and slogans like ‘Aap-da (AAP) Nahi Sahenge, Badal Kar Rahenge’. This aggressive approach could undermine AAP’s voter base.

Corruption charges, clashes with the Lieutenant Governor’s office, and other controversial decisions could further shake public trust in AAP, posing a significant challenge to its re-election bid.
