Tuhin Kanta Pandey Appointed as SEBI Chairman

New Delhi: The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet on Thursday approved the appointment of Odisha cadre IAS officer Tuhin Kanta Pandey as the new Chairman of the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI). Currently serving as Finance Secretary, the 1987-batch bureaucrat will assume office for an initial tenure of three years.

Pandey replaces Madhabi Puri Buch, whose term as SEBI Chairperson ends on March 1. Buch, who assumed office on March 2, 2022, was the first woman to head the markets regulator and the first person from the private sector to hold the position.

A government order confirmed Pandey’s appointment, stating, “The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved the appointment of Tuhin Kanta Pandey, IAS (OR:1987), Finance Secretary and Secretary, Department of Revenue, to the post of Chairman, SEBI, initially for a period of three years from the date of assumption of charge or until further orders, whichever is earlier.”

Earlier in January, the government had invited applications for the post, setting February 17, 2025, as the deadline for submissions. SEBI chiefs have the option to receive a salary equivalent to a Secretary to the Government of India or a consolidated monthly salary of ₹5,62,500, excluding housing and transportation perks.

Buch succeeded former SEBI Chairman Ajay Tyagi, an ex-IAS officer who served a three-year term followed by a two-year extension. Before her appointment at SEBI, Buch had an extensive corporate career, including key roles at ICICI Bank and ICICI Securities, where she served as CEO from 2009 to 2011.
