Trained Elephant ‘Yashoda’ Passes Away in Similipal Forest, Odisha
Baripada: A trained elephant named ‘Yashoda,’ who had been ailing for several months after her relocation from Chandaka, died this morning at Similipal forest in Mayurbhanj district, Odisha. The 60-year-old elephant was undergoing treatment at the Jenabil forest range under the Similipal forest division when she succumbed to her illness, according to the Forest Department.
Yashoda was moved to Similipal from Chandaka forest six months ago, but shortly after her relocation, she fell ill. Despite receiving veterinary care, her health deteriorated over the past three months, ultimately leading to her passing.
Prior to her illness, Yashoda played a crucial role in wildlife management, monitoring the movements of other animals in the forest. Notably, in 2018, she assisted the forest department in tranquilizing a tigress named ‘Sundari’ at Satkosia forest.
The loss of Yashoda is a significant blow to the wildlife management efforts in the region, highlighting the challenges faced by relocated wildlife.
