Torture Allegations at Sambalpur Rehab: One Arrested

Sambalpur: Allegations of abuse against mentally challenged individuals at the ‘Samartha’ rehabilitation centre in Netaji Nagar, Sambalpur, have led to the arrest of one person and the detention of another.

Harishchandra Das, secretary of the NGO managing the facility, has been arrested, while caregiver Swagatika Pradhan has been detained for questioning.

The incident came to light after videos surfaced showing staff members verbally abusing and physically assaulting inmates while food was being served. Claims of insufficient food and medical care for the residents have also been made.

A former caregiver, who recently left the facility, shared the videos with Rengali MLA Sudarshan Haripal. Upon receiving the evidence, the MLA alerted police, who initiated an investigation at the centre.

District Social Security Officer (DSSO) Thabira Mahanand has ordered the suspension of the centre’s operations, while Sambalpur Collector directed a detailed inquiry into the allegations.

Temporary arrangements are underway to relocate the residents to an integrated complex at Baijamunda. Another agency will take over management of the rehabilitation centre shortly.
