RSP Employee Loses Rs 3.58 Lakh to Cyber Fraud in Rourkela

Rourkela: In yet another alarming instance of rising cybercrime in Odisha, a Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) employee has reportedly been defrauded of Rs 3.58 lakh by cybercriminals in Sundargarh district.

According to sources, the incident took place after the employee came across an online advertisement for a credit card on a social media platform on May 7. Curious about the offer, he clicked on the link and was later contacted by an unidentified individual, who claimed to be from a financial institution.

The caller allegedly asked the victim to share sensitive personal and banking information, including his Aadhaar and PAN card details, under the pretext of processing the credit card application. Trusting the process, the victim complied.

However, within 24 hours, the RSP employee was shocked to discover that Rs 3.58 lakh had been withdrawn from his bank account without his knowledge or consent.

Following the incident, the victim lodged a formal complaint at the Sector-7 police station. Confirming the development, Inspector-in-Charge RN Patra said, “Based on the FIR, we have registered a case and are currently investigating the matter.”

The case highlights the growing threat of cyber frauds in the state, as criminals increasingly exploit digital platforms to target unsuspecting individuals. Authorities have urged the public to remain cautious and avoid sharing personal or banking information online.
