Rourkela’s Sunil Jojo Joins Senior National Hockey Camp, Eyes India Debut

Bengaluru/Rourkela: Rising hockey star Sunil Jojo from Rourkela is embracing a significant milestone in his sporting career as he joins the Indian Senior Men’s National Coaching Camp in Bengaluru. The 22-year-old defender, who has previously represented India in two Junior Hockey World Cups and was part of the bronze-winning squad at the recent Sultan of Johor Cup, is now training alongside the country’s top-tier players.

Speaking about his first experience at the senior national camp, Sunil admitted, “It takes some getting used to. It’s not easy. The physicality is much more, and the pace of the game is also very quick. You need to adjust and train very hard.” He noted that while his strengths lie in game awareness and tackling, he is focused on improving his stamina and endurance to excel at the highest level.

Sunil also finds inspiration in Indian hockey veteran Manpreet Singh, a player he admired growing up and now trains alongside. “I’m with him a lot now, and I can learn a lot from him. He plays in multiple positions and roles, so I try to learn how he adapts to different situations,” Sunil shared.

His ultimate goal is clear — to become a regular part of the Indian national team and compete in top international tournaments. “Like most of us, my dream is to win medals for the country,” he said.

Sunil was recently picked by the UP Rudras in the revamped Hero Hockey India League. Though his on-field time was limited, he viewed the opportunity as a valuable learning experience. “I learned a lot in the dressing room and on the training ground. I hope to use that experience moving forward,” he stated.

Acknowledging that success at the top level requires more than just physical ability, Sunil emphasized the importance of mental focus. “The best players in the world have mental strength. If you have that, then all your goals are achievable,” he remarked.

A proud product of Odisha’s rich hockey tradition, Sunil has also used his sport to uplift his family’s life. Currently employed with Southeastern Railways, he expressed gratitude for the support he received from his family. “It means a lot to support my family and ease their burden. Growing up, they supported me a lot, so it’s nice to give back.”

As he trains alongside India’s best, Sunil Jojo continues to chase his dream — bringing laurels to the country and honoring his roots in Odisha’s hockey heartland.
