Rohit Sharma to retire from Tests- Report

Team India captain Rohit Sharma who retired from T20Is after winning the T20 World Cup 2024 has reportedly ‘made up his mind’ to call it time from Test cricket as well and is likely to make the announcement after final Test of the 2024-25 Border Gavaskar Trophy in Sydney. As per a report from Times of India (TOI), there are murmurs in the Board of Control for Cricket (BCCI) between top officials and selectors about Rohit Sharma’s place in the Test squad.

The report suggests that if India qualify for the WTC final, the skipper will try to convince the board members and selectors to let him play in the final but if India fail to win the Sydney Test, he will call it time from Test cricket. The report came right after India lost the Melbourne Test against Australia by a massive margin of 184 runs in the ongoing Border Gavaskar-Trophy. The loss adds to the tally of losses under Rohit’s captaincy in six Tests (5 losses and a draw) which makes his case worse at the moment.

Recently, India were whitewashed at home by New Zealand for the first time in country’s Test history. The draw at Gabba came when rain helped India as they were in a losing position in the game and the only win in BGT 2024-25 has come at Perth under the leadership of vice-captain Jasprit Bumrah.
