Ravindra Jadeja disagrees with Shubman Gill’s fielding plan

In a now-viral clip during the Edgbaston Test, Shubman Gill and Ravindra Jadeja were heard on stump mics talking about fielding positions. In the last innings, Gill told Jadeja that they should push the long-on fielder forward in order to tempt English skipper Ben Stokes to go for a big hit. Jadeja respectfully disagreed and said the position of the fielder wasn’t correct.

“Kuch kaam.,” Jadeja said, which literally means “he’s of no use there.” Jadeja went on, “At least if the ball goes that way, someone should catch it. You put him there, sure, but someone should be there to catch.” Gill had proposed, “Jaddu bhai, usko bhi upar lelo yaar. Marne do ek aage badhke,” which means “Jadeja brother, take him up too. Let him try hitting one stepping out.”

This conversation illustrates the chemistry between Gill and Jadeja, both of whom played important parts in India’s 336-run victory. Gill made 269 and 161 runs in the two innings, whereas Jadeja scored 89 and 69*, accompanied by an important wicket. Their combination and planning conversations probably helped India seize the day.

India’s next test is the Lord’s Test from July 10, where the series is currently evenly poised at 1-1. Stokes finally fell to Washington Sundar’s impeccably disguised arm ball, and though Jamie Smith had a half-century, England could not chase the humongous 608-run target. This victory is India’s largest overseas Test win.
