Puri to Become Odisha’s Sixth Municipal Corporation

Bhubaneswar: In a major administrative decision, the Odisha government has announced the upgradation of Puri municipality to a municipal corporation, making it the sixth such civic body in the state. Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi made the announcement during a press conference held in Bhubaneswar on Thursday.

The new municipal corporation will include all localities of Puri town as well as several adjacent gram panchayats. The formal process of upgradation is set to begin from tomorrow, the Chief Minister confirmed.

“Lakhs of devotees from across India and abroad visit Puri to have darshan of Lord Jagannath. It is the state’s responsibility to ensure that devotees receive proper facilities. Additionally, residents of Puri deserve better civic infrastructure,” said Majhi, citing the need for improved urban governance and services.

Currently, only five cities in Odisha—Bhubaneswar, Cuttack, Berhampur, Sambalpur, and Rourkela—enjoy municipal corporation status. Puri will now become the sixth, marking a significant step in its urban development.

The Chief Minister also revealed plans to establish a world-class museum and library in Puri to promote and preserve Jagannath culture. The upcoming museum will be equipped with modern amenities to serve both locals and tourists.

“The government is committed to the all-round development of Puri, which is one of the four sacred Dhams in Hinduism,” Majhi added.
