Post-Diwali Smog Worsens Air Quality in Bhubaneswar, Cuttack
Bhubaneswar: Following two days of Diwali celebrations, air quality in Bhubaneswar and Cuttack has significantly deteriorated, with residents waking up to thick smog blanketing the cities this morning. The sharp drop in visibility on highways and city roads underscores the severity of the pollution in Odisha’s Twin City area.
An intense spell of rain on Friday initially helped bring air quality to manageable levels after the first day of Diwali. However, the improvement was short-lived. On the second night of Diwali, despite restrictions, widespread firecracker use led to another surge in pollution levels.
As of this morning, Bhubaneswar’s air quality index (AQI) registered at 135, a reading considered ‘unhealthy’ and posing health risks, particularly for sensitive groups. Cuttack’s air quality also stood in the ‘unhealthy’ category, with an AQI of 138, indicating similar risks for residents.
Local authorities are closely monitoring the situation and advising residents, especially vulnerable groups, to limit outdoor activities and take precautions as the air quality remains a concern.
