Police arrest 27 over killing of constable in Gazipur violence

The Uttar Pradesh Police arrested 16 more people in connection with the killing of Suresh Vats, a police constable on Monday here.


Vats was killed by a stone-pelting mob in Uttar Pradesh’s Ghazipur. All the arrested are workers of the Nishad Party, who allegedly was involved in the violent protests for reservation.

The arrests have been made based on video evidences gathered by the police. A total of 27 people have been arrested so far in related to the case.


On Saturday, Vats was attacked by a group of Nishad Party workers while he was returning from duty at Prime Minister Modi’s rally venue. He died after he was hit on the head by a stone when he went to end a traffic jam caused by the protesters.

Earlier on Sunday, Additional Director General (ADG) of the Varanasi zone PV Rama Shastri said that Nishad Party leader Arjun Kashyap is one of the main accused in the case and claimed to have enough evidence against him.


“Raids are being carried out to arrest him and others involved in this case,” she said.

Earlier, Vat’s son, VP Singh, said the police department is unable to protect its own officials. “Police are not being able to protect their own,” Singh said.


The Yogi Adityanath-led Uttar Pradesh government later announced a compensation of Rs 50 lakh for the family.


This is the second incident this month where a cop has been killed by protesters in Uttar Pradesh. On December 3, Inspector Subodh Singh and one more person were killed by an angry mob in Bulandshahr.
