PM interacts with CWG bound athletes

New Delhi, July 20(Reporters Today Bureau): Prime Minister Narendra Modi Wednesday interacted with the Indian contingent leaving for the Common wealth Games 2022 in Birmingham.

He spoke with the contingent through a virtual conference and conveyed his best wishes to the 322-strong contingent.

The contingent includes 215 athletes and 107 officials and support staff.

Various members of the Indian contingent have already reached Birmingham and the remaining would reach the venue before the formal opening of the tournament on July 23.

The Indian contingent includes top athletes like Neeraj Chopra, Bajrang Punia, Dutee Chand, among others.

Minister of Sports, Youth Affairs Anurag Thakur thanked the Prime Minister for his constant support for the athletes, which has helped India to reach new heights in the sporting world.

Modi explained how the Indian athletes have the opportunity to showcase their dominance before the entire world in the next ten days.

“Many of you have already represented India in big sports events and have brought glory to the nation. Similarly, this time too the coaches and support staffs are pumped up with excitement. Those who have the experience of playing in the CWG, they have the chance to test themselves again. The 65 athletes who are representing India for the first time, I believe they will also leave a mark in the tournament,” he said.

He began his conversation with Maharashtra-born 300m steeplechase athlete Avinash Sable.

Speaking to badminton star Tressa Jolly, the PM asked her about her bond with Indian badminton legend Pullela Gopichand’s daughter Gayatri Gopichand.

Modi made a special mention of Singapore Open 2022 winner PV Sindhu.
