Pahili Raja today

Bhubaneswar: Today marks the beginning of the three-day Raja Parba festival in Odisha, with Pahili Raja being the first day of celebration.

Raja festival honours womanhood, fertility, and the rejuvenating power of nature. The term “Raja” originates from “Rajaswala,” referring to menstruating of women, symbolizing the Earth’s menstrual cycle during the monsoon season.

Significance of Pahili Raja

Pahili Raja is a day of great cultural significance, especially for women, who take a break from household chores and indulge in self-care. Women dress in new clothes, adorn themselves with jewelry, and apply alata (red dye) on their feet. The festival emphasizes the sanctity of womanhood, the cycles of nature, and the need to honor both.

Celebrations across Odisha

During the three-day festival, agricultural activities come to a halt, symbolizing the Earth’s rest. Women and girls enjoy a break from daily chores, dressing up in new clothes, playing on traditional swings, and singing folk songs. Special delicacies like poda pitha, chakuli pitha, and manda pitha are prepared, and homes are cleaned and decorated. The festival fosters a culture of respect, environmental sensitivity, and community bonding.

Weather forecast

However, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted rainfall activity in many Odisha districts, which might dampen the celebrations. Despite the weather forecast, the spirit of Raja Parba remains strong, with people eagerly awaiting the festivities.
