Orissa HC: Ragging Accused to Serve at Orphanages
Cuttack: The Orissa High Court in Cuttack has handed down a unique disciplinary punishment to four law students accused of ragging a junior. The Court directed the students to volunteer at an orphanage of their choice for one week, either by teaching or organizing workshops for the children.
The judicial bench, headed by Justice Shiv Shankar Mishra, quashed the case pending in the lower court while pronouncing the judgment. The students were instructed to inform the chosen orphanage’s management about the Court’s order and, upon completing their volunteer work, obtain a certificate from the orphanage authorities as proof of compliance.
The case originated from a complaint lodged by the junior student at Bharatpur police station. In issuing the verdict, the Court expressed hope for a positive transformation in the mindset of the younger generation and emphasized the importance of social responsibility.
The four students belong to a private law college based in Bhubaneswar. The judgment has been welcomed as a constructive approach to addressing misconduct among students.
