Odisha to Witness Heavy Rainfall Till July 19

Bhubaneswar: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning for heavy to very heavy rainfall in Odisha until July 19 due to two low-pressure systems developing over the Bay of Bengal. Certain districts—including Koraput, Malkangiri, Nabarangpur, and Rayagada—could see rainfall ranging from 7 to 20 cm due to a low-pressure area off the South Odisha coast. Additionally, Nuapada, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Ganjam, Gajapati, and Balangir may experience rainfall between 7 to 11 cm. Thunderstorms and lightning are also forecasted in northern interior Odisha and along the coast.

The IMD cautioned that from July 15 to 16, squally weather with wind speeds of 40 to 50 km/h is likely over the northwest Bay of Bengal, urging fishermen to avoid venturing into these waters. While there are no weather warnings for July 16, rainfall is expected to return on July 17 in Ganjam, Gajapati, Rayagada, Kandhamal, Kalahandi, Nayagarh, Malkangiri, and Koraput due to the anticipated formation of another low-pressure area around July 19.

On July 18, heavy rain is predicted for Malkangiri, Koraput, Rayagada, Gajapati, Ganjam, Kandhamal, Kalahandi, Nabarangpur, Nuapada, and Balangir. The IMD warns of continued heavy to very heavy rainfall on July 19 in Koraput and Malkangiri, with significant precipitation expected across several districts. The SOA’s Centre for Environment and Climate (CEC) has indicated that the low-pressure system over northwest Bay of Bengal may intensify into a depression by July 18 or 19, moving northward and impacting Odisha’s northern, western, and coastal regions with heavy rainfall until July 21.
