Odisha to Tighten Rules for Zero Night Celebrations
Bhubaneswar: Odisha Law Minister Prithviraj Harichandan announced stricter regulations for Zero Night celebrations across the state, emphasizing a crackdown on illegal liquor sales and unauthorized events ahead of New Year’s Eve.
In a recent press interaction, the Law Minister stated that no temporary liquor licenses will be issued for celebrations on December 31. A zero-tolerance policy will be enforced against the illegal sale of liquor or sales without a valid license. The restrictions will remain in effect until January 31, 2025.
Minister Harichandan warned that organizers cannot bypass regulations by citing Zero Night festivities. Venues, restaurants, and clubs found selling liquor without proper authorization will face strict action. Every district administration has been notified, and intensive checks will be conducted throughout the state.
Additionally, the Odisha Excise Department will heighten surveillance to curb drug trafficking during the festive period. Excise Commissioner Narasinh Bhola revealed that intelligence reports suggest preparations for unapproved Zero Night events are underway in some areas. The department has pledged to intervene and prevent unauthorized gatherings.
Joint teams comprising the Special Task Force (STF) and the Excise Department will conduct raids at suspected venues to clamp down on illegal activities. District Collectors have been instructed to monitor and report any suspicious activity during the year-end period.
Excise officials confirmed that checks will continue until mid-January, ensuring that Zero Night celebrations across Odisha remain lawful and under strict supervision.
