Odisha to Introduce Cow Slaughter Ban

Bhubaneswar: The Odisha government is preparing to introduce legislation banning cow slaughter in the state, Law Minister Prithiviraj Harichandan announced today. He indicated that the proposed law will be modeled after similar legislation in Assam to curb the illegal transportation and slaughter of cows.

Fisheries and Animal Resources Development Minister Gokulananda Mallik stated that a high-level committee, led by Deputy Chief Minister KV Singh Deo, has been established to address the issue. He emphasized that the government is committed to promoting the dairy sector by tackling illegal activities related to cattle. “Strict action will be taken against those involved in cow slaughter,” Mallik affirmed.

The opposition Biju Janata Dal (BJD) welcomed the government’s initiative but urged caution against targeting specific communities. BJD MLA and former minister Pramila Mallik said, “We support the government’s intention but urge them to identify those involved in illegal cattle transportation and beef sales without discrimination.”

Meanwhile, Congress MLA Taraprasad Bahinipati called for a focus on halting beef exports before implementing a ban on cow slaughter. He highlighted that Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh are the largest exporters of beef, questioning the political affiliations of those involved. “Odisha also faces illegal cattle transportation to Andhra Pradesh. The government should disclose the identities of those responsible,” Bahinipati added.

The proposed legislation has sparked a broader debate on cattle protection and beef exports in the state.
