Odisha Sets Minimum Age for Class 1 Admission at Six Years Under NEP 2020

Bhubaneswar: The Odisha government has officially set the minimum age for Class 1 admission at six years or above, aligning with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. This decision, made after extensive discussions with educationists and experts, aims to provide a structured and holistic academic foundation for students.

The implementation of NEP 2020 in Odisha will commence from the 2025-26 academic session, with the new age criteria ensuring children receive a strong early education before advancing to higher classes.

Additionally, to accommodate students and parents, the government has extended the age calculation deadline. Previously, children had to complete six years by March 31 to be eligible for admission. However, the new cutoff date has been extended to September 1, offering greater flexibility for parents in the admission process.

The School and Mass Education Department, announcing the decision on Tuesday, emphasized that the policy change aligns with national standards and will be effectively implemented across all schools in the state. Parents and school authorities have been urged to take note of the revised criteria and plan accordingly for the upcoming academic year.
