Odisha revives 1990 Rules for Compassionate Appointments

Bhubaneswar: In a move to provide relief to families of deceased government employees, the Odisha government has decided to revert to the Odisha Civil Services (Rehabilitation Assistance) Rules, 1990, for compassionate appointments.
The state government issued a notification on Friday confirming the cabinet’s decision, which enables the appointment of one family member in Group C or Group D positions following the death of a government employee.
The new provisions will be based on a certificate issued by the district administration, a reversal of the 2020 rules that had replaced this system with a complex marking system tied to the deceased’s employee record.
This move will benefit families of government employees who passed away between 1990 and 2020, offering them job opportunities under the original 1990 rules.
The proposal, which had been approved by the cabinet last month, comes after numerous families filed cases in courts, seeking relief. Chief Minister Mohan Majhi had highlighted the plight of these families, emphasizing the need for a solution.
Advocate General Pitambar Acharya hailed the decision as “historic,” revealing that it would resolve approximately 500 pending Supreme Court cases related to the issue. “This decision by CM Majhi brings much-needed comfort to the grieving families of deceased employees,” Acharya commented.
