Odisha Reports 49 Heat-Related Illnesses Amid Soaring Temperatures

Bhubaneswar: With intense heatwave conditions gripping Odisha, the State Government has reported 49 cases of heat-related illnesses across several districts, raising concerns over public health and safety.

According to Public Health Director Dr. Nilakantha Mishra, the data compiled till April 20 reveals that Sambalpur district witnessed the highest number of cases, with 40 reported on Sunday alone. Deogarh district reported six cases, while Khordha, Mayurbhanj, and Keonjhar districts registered one case each.

Dr. Mishra informed that one individual was hospitalised due to heat-related illness on April 19, but clarified that no deaths or hospitalisations from suspected heat stroke have been reported so far. He urged citizens to remain cautious and limit outdoor activities during peak hours.

“People should take all necessary precautions and avoid going out unless it’s absolutely essential,” he advised, in light of the persistently high temperatures.

By 2:30 PM on Sunday, four locations in Odisha recorded temperatures above 40°C. Jharsuguda topped the list at 44.8°C, followed by Sambalpur at 42.6°C, Hirakud at 41.8°C, and Rourkela at 41.2°C.

The health department continues to monitor the situation closely as the heatwave persists across the state.
