Odisha Pays ₹21.96 Crore for Kharif Crop Losses

Bhubaneswar: The Odisha Government has initiated compensation disbursal to farmers affected by post-harvest losses of kharif crops due to unseasonal rains in December. A total of ₹21.96 crore is being credited directly to the bank accounts of affected farmers, official sources confirmed.

The losses were reported across one lakh plots, with compensation being provided through insurance companies including the Agricultural Insurance Company of India Ltd, SBI General Insurance Company Ltd, Future Generali India Insurance Ltd, and Reliance GIC Ltd. The companies conducted field assessments as directed by the state government before initiating the compensation process.

The unseasonal rain caused significant damage, particularly to harvested paddy. To expedite relief, the state government urged farmers to report their crop losses within 72 hours on the Pradhanmantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY) portal. The deadline was later extended by three days to accommodate more registrations.

According to officials, 2,00,729 plots were reported as damaged under the PMFBY. Ganjam district recorded the highest number of applications at 47,969, followed by significant submissions from Gajapati, Puri, Kendrapara, Nayagarh, Cuttack, Khordha, and Jagatsinghpur districts, totaling 1,62,972 applications.

The compensation effort underscores the government’s commitment to supporting farmers in overcoming the challenges posed by natural calamities.
