Odisha Minister to Meet Mamata Banerjee Over Potato Supply Amid Rising Demand

Bhubaneswar: In a bid to address Odisha’s growing demand for potatoes, Food Supplies and Consumer Welfare Minister Krushna Chandra Patra announced on Tuesday that he will soon travel to Kolkata to hold talks with West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee regarding a streamlined supply of the essential commodity to the state.
Speaking to the media, Patra said, “We will discuss with her how potatoes can reach the state on time and be available to the people. This is the responsibility of the Civil Supplies Department. What’s the issue in sitting down with her? We aim to become self-reliant.”
Odisha’s annual potato requirement is estimated at 14 lakh metric tons, while local production accounts for only around 5 lakh metric tons, resulting in a significant shortfall. To bridge the gap, the state is exploring procurement options from either West Bengal or Uttar Pradesh, depending on availability and pricing.
Referring to past political ties, Patra expressed confidence in the potential collaboration, stating,
“There is no place for anger or resentment in politics. Didi won’t be upset with us. If we get potatoes at the right time and price, we will procure them; otherwise, we will source them from Uttar Pradesh.”
The minister’s remarks highlight the state’s proactive approach to ensure timely procurement and stabilize prices, amid concerns of seasonal shortages that have affected supply chains in recent years.
The upcoming talks are expected to focus on logistics, pricing, and long-term arrangements to secure a consistent supply of potatoes for Odisha’s consumers.
