Odisha Issues Flood Alert as Rivers Cross Danger Marks

Bhubaneswar: The Odisha Water Resources Department has issued a flood alert across several districts as continuous rainfall has led to rising water levels in multiple rivers, including the Jalka, Baitarani, and Brahmani — some of which are flowing above their danger marks.

Addressing the media, Chief Engineer Chandrashekhar Padhi confirmed that the Jalka River is currently flowing at 7.20 meters, exceeding its danger level of 6.5 meters. “We are in constant coordination with district administrations. Evacuation and restoration measures will be taken wherever necessary,” he stated.

The Baitarani River has also crossed its danger level, recording a water height of 38.22 meters. Officials are particularly concerned about the situation in Jajpur and Bhadrak districts, where residents from low-lying areas have already been shifted to relief camps.

“We anticipate flood impact in Dhamnagar and nearby low-lying regions. Teams are on alert and ready for emergency operations,” Padhi added.

Meanwhile, the Brahmani River has received around 38 mm of rainfall. At Rengali Dam, the current water level is at 121 meters, still within safe limits. “Three gates have been opened to regulate outflow. Low-lying regions in Kendrapara have been put on alert,” the official said.

In the Hirakud Dam, the Upper Mahanadi catchment recorded about 35 mm of rainfall. The water level rose from 609 feet to 610 feet in the last 24 hours. Padhi said, “We are planning to release water through 20 gates to manage inflows. At present, there is no major flood threat in nearby areas.”

The Subarnarekha River, currently at 6.99 meters, is still below the danger mark. However, officials have warned that water levels may rise further within the next 24 hours, potentially causing localized flooding.

“All district administrations and local communities have been alerted. Field response teams are already on the ground,” Padhi confirmed, urging residents in vulnerable zones to remain vigilant and follow safety advisories.
