Odisha Doubles Pension for Freedom Fighters

Bhubaneswar: The Odisha government has doubled the pensions of freedom fighters who were imprisoned during India’s struggle for independence, Chief Minister Mohan Majhi announced during the 38th Independence Fighters’ Day celebration today.

The monthly pension for jailed freedom fighters has been increased from ₹10,000 to ₹20,000. Similarly, those who participated in the freedom movement but were not imprisoned will now receive ₹15,000, up from the existing ₹9,000.

Freedom fighters enrolled in the national pensioners’ list will see their pensions rise from ₹8,000 to ₹10,000. Additionally, individuals detained during the national emergency under the Maintenance of Internal Security Act (MISA) will receive ₹20,000.

Majhi highlighted the government’s commitment to honoring freedom fighters who have been overlooked by history. As part of this effort, the Shahid Madho Singh Haath Kharcha Scheme will be launched on January 5 to pay tribute to their contributions.
