Odisha Begins Revival of Bijayananda Sugar Mill in Balangir

Bhubaneswar: The Odisha government has initiated the process to revive the Bijayananda Cooperative Sugar Mill in Balangir district, marking a significant step toward rejuvenating cooperative sugar industries in the state.
Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi has approved a proposal submitted by Indian Potash Limited (IPL) for the revival of the defunct mill. This move follows his earlier appeal to Union Home and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah, seeking support for restoring Odisha’s cooperative sugar industry sector.
In response to the state’s interest, the Cooperation Department had formally approached the Managing Director of IPL. Following a preliminary survey, IPL conveyed its willingness to take up the revival of sugar mills in Odisha and outlined certain action plans.
Taking the process forward, the Registrar of Cooperative Societies in Odisha has written to the Balangir Collector, directing the administration to verify the availability of encroachment-free land within the sugar mill premises.
Additionally, Bhaktabandhu Sahoo, Additional Registrar of Cooperative Societies (Administration), will conduct an on-ground inspection of the site over two days beginning June 20. The Balangir Collector has been asked to provide full support in identifying land owned by the mill and assessing its encroachment status during the inspection.
The revival of the Bijayananda Cooperative Sugar Mill is expected to boost the rural economy of Balangir district and provide a fresh lease of life to cooperative industrial ventures in Odisha.
