Nursing – a commitment to humanity, compassion, and excellence: Guv

Bhubaneswar: Odisha Governor Dr. Hari Babu Kambhampati has emphasized the profound nature of nursing as not just a profession but a commitment to humanity, rooted in compassion, sincerity, and dedication.

“Nursing is not merely an ideal profession; it is a profound commitment to serving humanity,” the Governor said in an address at the oath-taking ceremony of Kalinga Nursing College on Monday.

“It is not a destination, but a continuous challenge. It goes beyond just scientific knowledge and clinical skills — it embodies the human touch — empathy, patience, and care.”

Dr. Kambhampati highlighted the critical role nurses play in patient care. “Nurses are often the first to reach out to patients and remain with them until the end of their treatment. They offer solace in sorrow and hope in times of despair,” he said, underscoring the unwavering support nurses provide during the most trying moments.

The Governor also lauded the efforts of Kalinga Hospital and Kalinga Nursing College in fostering the development of dedicated nurse practitioners who not only possess medical skills but also embrace moral values and ethics in their service.

The lamp lighting ceremony, a time-honoured tradition, holds significant symbolic value. Dr. Kambhampati noted that it was an opportunity to honour the legacy of Florence Nightingale, the founder of modern nursing. “The lighting of the lamp represents the spread of knowledge, the commencement of lifelong learning, and an enduring commitment to upholding the highest standards of patient care,” he said.

He further added that the white gown worn by nursing students stands as a powerful symbol of purity, faith, and commitment. “Their service should be marked by compassion and excellence,” the Governor emphasized, reinforcing the importance of upholding the noble values of the profession.
