Nepali Student’s Death at KIIT: MEA, Nepal Call for Probe

Bhubaneswar: The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has issued a statement regarding the tragic death of Nepali student Prisha Shah, a first-year B.Tech Computer Science student at KIIT University in Bhubaneswar.
Prisha, who hailed from the Birgunj region of Nepal, was found hanging in her hostel room on the university campus on May 1. Her sudden death has prompted widespread concern, with authorities in both India and Nepal closely monitoring the investigation.
In an official statement, the MEA said, “The Ministry of External Affairs has been in constant touch with the Odisha State Government since we became aware of the tragic incident. The State Government has extended full support to the family of the deceased, and a thorough enquiry is currently being conducted by the Odisha Police.”
Reaffirming India’s commitment to the safety of foreign students, the MEA added, “The Government of India takes the safety, security, and well-being of all international students very seriously. We remain in close contact with the Nepali authorities, the Odisha State Government, and KIIT management to ensure real-time communication and coordination in this matter.”
Nepal’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Arzu Rana Deuba, expressed deep sorrow over the student’s death and confirmed that the Government of Nepal is actively pursuing the matter through diplomatic channels to uncover the truth behind the incident.
Nepal’s Ambassador to India, Dr. Shankar P Sharma, also stated that the embassy is coordinating with the Ministry of External Affairs, Odisha Government, police officials, and KIIT University to ensure a comprehensive investigation.
Meanwhile, the Twin City Commissionerate Police have launched an official probe into the matter, and further details are awaited.
The incident has sparked emotional reactions and demands for clarity from both the Indian and Nepali communities, as investigations continue.
