Naveen Patnaik to Attend Russian Embassy Tribute to Biju Patnaik

Bhubaneswar: Former Odisha Chief Minister and Leader of the Opposition Naveen Patnaik departed for New Delhi on Monday to attend a special commemorative event at the Russian Embassy, where his father, the legendary Biju Patnaik, will be posthumously honoured for his contributions during World War II.

The event, set for May 7, is part of a two-day programme commemorating the 80th anniversary of Russia’s victory over Nazi Germany. As part of the tribute, a commemorative plaque in honour of Biju Patnaik will be unveiled on the embassy premises.

Biju Patnaik is remembered for his courageous support to the Soviet Red Army, especially during the Battle of Stalingrad, where he carried out critical missions flying arms and supplies into the war zone. His wartime efforts have earned him international recognition, making him one of the few Indian figures celebrated for direct involvement in WWII combat operations.

Russian Ambassador to India, Denis Alipov, extended a personal invitation to Naveen Patnaik for the ceremony. The observance will culminate on May 9—Victory Day—with cultural and diplomatic tributes to WWII heroes.
