Naveen Patnaik Condoles Puri Stampede, Slams Govt Over Rath Yatra Chaos

Bhubaneswar: Biju Janata Dal (BJD) President and Leader of Opposition Naveen Patnaik expressed deep sorrow over the tragic stampede at Saradhabali in Puri that claimed the lives of three devotees and left several others injured. The incident occurred in the early hours of Sunday, a day after the Rath Yatra festivities began.
In a statement, Patnaik extended his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and prayed to Lord Jagannath for the speedy recovery of the injured. He urged the state government to ensure the smooth and safe conduct of the upcoming Rath Yatra rituals, including Adapa Bije, Bahuda Yatra, and Suna Besha.
Criticising the administration for its poor handling of the festival, Patnaik said, “The inordinate delay in pulling the Nandighosha chariot on Rath Yatra day was conveniently attributed to ‘Mahaprabhu’s wish’ — a shocking excuse that masks the administration’s complete abdication of responsibility.”
The stampede, which followed a chaotic crowd situation near the Gundicha Temple, has drawn widespread criticism, with many pointing to inadequate crowd control measures and police deployment.
Patnaik’s remarks reflect growing concerns about the state’s preparedness for managing massive gatherings during one of Odisha’s most significant religious events.
