Maharashtra govt contemplates Plastic packaging ban
Authorities in Maharashtra are thinking of imposing ban on products wrapped in plastic material in the wake of industries failing to evolve a buyback chain for collection and recycling of the wrappers.Hundreds of FMCG brands have been issued notices.
A three-month deadline given to all the companies using banned plastic packaging to evolve such a mechanism ended on September 30.The next day the state started collecting fines, which went over 2 crore.Plastic pouches such as the ones used to package chips, chocolates , biscuits and buttermilk are even today strewn all over in public places and around garbage heaps, and even in drains and water bodies.
Consumers and retailers littering palces with used packets can also be penalized by local self-government bodies on the spot.
