Low-Pressure Over Bay Triggers Rain, Temp Dip in Odisha

Bhubaneswar: A well-marked low-pressure area continues to persist over the west-central and adjoining southwest Bay of Bengal, accompanied by a cyclonic circulation extending up to the middle tropospheric levels, the regional weather office said on Tuesday.

According to the forecast, the system is likely to move nearly northwards over the west-central Bay of Bengal for the next 12 hours, maintaining its current intensity. It is then expected to re-curve north-northeastwards and gradually weaken over the central Bay of Bengal within the following 24 hours.

Meanwhile, a trough extending from southeast Madhya Pradesh to east Gangetic West Bengal across Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand at 0.9 km above mean sea level is also influencing the weather conditions in the region.

Light to moderate rainfall was reported at isolated places across southern and northern interior districts of Odisha, including Koraput, Rayagada, Deogarh, Kalahandi, Ganjam, and Puri. Dry weather prevailed over the rest of the state.

Temperature trends showed variability across Odisha. Many parts of coastal Odisha and isolated pockets in interior regions recorded temperatures 2-3°C below normal. In contrast, some coastal areas experienced temperatures 2°C above normal. Boudh recorded the state’s highest maximum temperature at 41.9°C, while the lowest minimum temperature of 19.8°C was noted in Bhadrak.

The India Meteorological Department has predicted light to moderate rain or thunderstorms in the afternoon and evening hours over several districts today and tomorrow. The districts likely to be affected include Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, Gajapati, Mayurbhanj, Sundargarh, Rayagada, Koraput, and Malkangiri.
