Low-Pressure Over Bay Triggers Heavy Rain Alert in Odisha

Bhubaneswar: A low-pressure area has developed over the northwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining coastal regions of West Bengal and Bangladesh, raising concerns of heavy rainfall across Odisha and neighbouring eastern states, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Saturday.

According to IMD scientist Umashankar Dash, the system is expected to move slowly in a west-northwestward direction over the next 48 hours, impacting regions including north Odisha, West Bengal, and Jharkhand.

As a result, several parts of Odisha have already begun witnessing moderate to heavy rainfall. The IMD has issued an orange alert for Bhubaneswar and Cuttack, signalling the possibility of intense downpours in the cities.

Heavy rainfall is expected at isolated places across multiple districts in the state. Additionally, the system may cause rough to very rough sea conditions, and fishermen have been strongly advised not to venture into the sea during this period.

The weather department has warned of continued heavy to very heavy rainfall over parts of Odisha and neighbouring areas over the coming days, urging residents and authorities to stay alert and take necessary precautions.
