Kumki Elephant Dies in Similipal

Mayurbhanj: In a sorrowful incident, a Kumki elephant (trained elephant) named Bhabani died today in Similipal Reserve forest. She was kept in the Jenabil forest.
According to information, the Kumki elephant was brought to Odisha in 2001 along with two other elephants. Bhabani was brought along with Sobha and Mahendra from Karnataka to Similipal. The forest officials reached the spot to inspect the reason behind her death.
A tusk of Bhabani was broken and it was not consuming food for the past few days said sources. She was 62-years old and brought from Karnataka. However, if she had any disease or not is not known as of now.
Few months ago Sobha had died. On January 12, another Kumki elephant Mahendra had died of prolonged illness. At that time Mahendra was 65-years-old.
On the other hand, two days ago in a saddening incident, an elephant was hurled a bomb in Ujjwalpur forest range of Sundargarh district. The bomb had injured the trunk of the elephant. The elephant succumbed to the injuries while undergoing treatment.
In 2020, in a similar incident, some miscreants in Kerala killed a pregnant elephant by hiding fire crackers in bananas and making the elephant eat it.
