Jagannath Temple to Use Organic Rice for Mahaprasad

Bhubaneswar: The Jagannath Temple in Puri will soon begin using organically produced rice for the preparation of Mahaprasad, a sacred offering at the shrine.

The announcement was made by Arabinda Kumar Padhee, Principal Secretary of the Agriculture & Farmers’ Empowerment Department and Chief Administrator of Shree Jagannath Temple Administration (SJTA), during the ongoing Krushi Odisha-2025 event in Bhubaneswar.

“Organic rice will soon replace conventionally grown rice for Mahaprasad preparation at the Jagannath temple. Organically produced rice is more suitable for Mahaprasad, as it is free from chemical fertilizers and pesticides,” Padhee stated.

He emphasized the state government’s commitment to promoting organic farming across Odisha.

At the Jagannath temple, the Suar and Mahasuar servitors are exclusively permitted to prepare Mahaprasad, commonly known as Abadha, in the temple’s kitchen. The offerings, which include rice, dal, mixed curry, various cakes, and delicacies, are cooked using traditional methods.

The cooking process involves earthen pots and firewood, maintaining a centuries-old tradition that adds to the sanctity of the temple cuisine.
