Husband sets wife on fire over dowry

A 28 year old woman Chandrakanti Barik  was allegedly burnt alive by her husband  and in-laws over dowry in Dinagar village under Begunia PS of Khurda district here on Sunday.

The deceased, identified as Diptimayee Das of Parvatipur village under Fathegarh PS of Nayagarh district had married Debashish Barik 10 years back  and also had a daughter and a son. During the time of marriage Chandrakanti in-laws has demanded Rs 50,000 but her father was unable to give the full dowry and given only Rs 20,000 and because of this she was always threaten to ask more money and also a bike. When Chandrakanti expressed her inability to pay the amount she was first assaulted by her husband and in-laws who later poured kerosene on her and set her afire, the complaint stated.

As per the report when she was burnt her husband admitted her to Khurda hospital later shifted to Sum hospital Bhubaneswar with 90 per cent burns, which meant survival was difficult. After the incident victim husband call up to her family and said she was burnt due to gas leakage.

On the basis of the FIR by victim’s father, police filed a case against Chandrakanti’s husband and in-laws. “All the accused have fled the village after the incident. Investigation is on over the matter.
