Hirakud Dam Authorities Close Four Gates as Rainfall Subsides

Bhubaneswar: The Hirakud Dam authorities have closed four sluice gates following a decline in water levels due to reduced rainfall in the upper catchment areas of the Mahanadi Basin. At present, water is being discharged through 16 gates, officials confirmed.

Earlier on Sunday, the dam had released the season’s first floodwater through 20 gates in response to sustained heavy rainfall across the basin. However, with rainfall levels decreasing, gate operations have been adjusted to maintain a safe water level in the reservoir.

Authorities have assured that there is no immediate threat of flooding in downstream areas. The situation is being closely monitored, and further gate adjustments will be made based on updated rainfall and river flow data.

Officials added that the dam management remains on high alert and prepared to respond swiftly to any changes in water inflow or weather conditions across the region.
