Bhubaneswar: Odisha Government is mulling a special policy to construct 75,000 kilometer roads in State within the next five years.
A review meeting in this regard was held here chaired by Law, Public Works and Excise Minister Prithviraj Harichandan to formulate a specific policy for the construction, repair and improvement of roads in the state.
The meeting discussed how to improve and streamline the transportation facilities in the state. The government intends to construct 15,000 km road every year, according to officials. Efforts are being made to work out a policy for coordinating the National Highways authority, Urban Development, Rural Development, Panchayati Raj, Urban Development Departments.
At present, due to lack of coordination between various departments, roads are being dug up repeatedly to lay water pipes, electricity lines, telephone and internet cables, etc.
To overcome this problem, special utility corridors will be constructed along various roads. Along with this, arrangements will be made for planting saplings so that trees do not have to be cut during road expansion.
Harichandan emphasized that if necessary, old and big trees can be shifted to another place and transplanted at suitable places. Along with this, the policy will mention the construction methods and standards of short, medium and long bridges to be constructed at various places, he said.
To eliminate issues arising due to land acquisition in rural areas for road construction, there will be a special funding arrangement to resolve this issue.
Along with this, not only new roads will be constructed but also regular inspection and repair of old roads will be taken up.
Attention will be paid to road inspection and repair during monsoon and pre-monsoon and post-monsoon. To avoid road accidents, special construction methods will be adopted, environment will be given importance during road construction, and how waste can be used in road construction using modern technology was discussed in the review meeting.
