Godman Arrested for Alleged Rape in Sambalpur

Sambalpur: A self-styled godman was arrested in Odisha’s Sambalpur district for allegedly raping a tribal woman under the guise of treating her with traditional medicine. The incident occurred in Rairakhol, where the accused, identified as Prafulla Mahala from Bhalaipadar village in Boudh district, had been residing in an ashram at Baishnabjholi.

According to reports, Mahala, who had been presenting himself as a spiritual leader for years, allegedly intoxicated the woman when she approached him for a health issue and then sexually assaulted her. The woman later managed to escape and was admitted to Rairakhol hospital as her condition worsened.

The victim subsequently filed a complaint with the police, prompting an investigation that led to Mahala’s arrest. While in custody, Mahala denied the allegations, including claims of administering any medication. Officials also noted that the victim was previously acquainted with the accused.

Police confirmed that Mahala is being interrogated, and further details will be disclosed following the victim’s medical examination. The investigation is ongoing.
