Girl Dies from Poisoned Rice in Odisha

Bhubaneswar: A 12-year-old girl tragically died after unknowingly consuming rice laced with rat poison at her home in Riun village, under the Birmitrapur police jurisdiction in Odisha’s Sundargarh district.

The victim, identified as Kiran, was the daughter of Sagar Kumbhar, and a Class-V student at Riun Primary School. On Tuesday afternoon, Kiran returned home from school and accidentally ate the rice, which had been mixed with poison to kill rats. Within minutes of consuming the rice, her condition rapidly deteriorated.

Her family rushed her to the Rourkela Government Hospital, but despite efforts to save her, Kiran was declared dead by doctors.

Sagar Kumbhar filed a complaint at the Kuarmunda police outpost the following day. The police seized the body, conducted a post-mortem, and registered a case of unnatural death. The body was later returned to the family.

This tragic incident comes just months after Sagar’s elder daughter also passed away after being bitten by a snake while sleeping at home.
