Gennaro Gattuso Appointed Head Coach of Italy National Football Team

Rome: Gennaro Gattuso has been officially named the new head coach of the Italian national football team, the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) announced on Sunday. His appointment comes shortly after Luciano Spalletti stepped down following a disappointing start to Italy’s 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign.
Spalletti, who took charge of the Azzurri in August 2023 on a three-year deal, resigned after Italy’s 3-0 defeat to Norway and an overall underwhelming Euro 2024 performance. Despite securing a 2-0 victory against Moldova, Spalletti confirmed his decision to step down during a press conference ahead of the match.
Announcing the appointment, FIGC President Gabriele Gravina praised Gattuso’s legacy and commitment:
“Gattuso is a symbol of Italian football – the blue jersey is like a second skin for him. His motivation, professionalism, and experience will be crucial for the national team moving forward,” Gravina said.
“I thank him for embracing this challenge and aligning with our long-term vision for the growth of Italian football.”
Gattuso, 47, enjoyed a celebrated playing career as a midfielder for AC Milan, where he won two Serie A titles and two UEFA Champions League trophies. He was also part of Italy’s 2006 World Cup-winning squad.
Since retiring in 2013, Gattuso has coached several clubs, including AC Milan, Napoli, Valencia, Marseille, and most recently, Hajduk Split during the 2024/25 season.
Italy currently sits third in Group I of the UEFA World Cup Qualifiers, with three points from two matches. Norway leads the group with four straight wins. Only the group winners will earn direct qualification to the 2026 FIFA World Cup, while second-place finishers must go through the playoffs—a stage that has proven costly for Italy in the past, with the team missing the last two World Cups due to playoff exits.
Gattuso now faces the urgent task of revitalizing the squad’s fortunes as they aim for a place in the 2026 tournament.
