Ganjam Police Arrest 18, Seize Illegal Arms in Crime Crackdown

Berhampur: In a significant crackdown on organised crime and illegal arms, Ganjam police launched a special overnight operation across multiple police station limits, resulting in the arrest of 18 individuals and the seizure of 17 illegal firearms along with 66 rounds of live ammunition.

The operation, part of a preventive policing initiative led by Ganjam SP, targeted individuals involved in criminal syndicates. According to a press release issued by the district police, several of those arrested are suspected members of an organised crime network.

The police have invoked the newly introduced Section 111 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, which specifically addresses organised crime, in addition to provisions of the Arms Act and other relevant laws.

Preliminary investigations suggest that the seized weapons may have been sourced from outside Odisha. Special teams are being constituted to trace the origin of the arms and dismantle the inter-state supply network.

In a further step, authorities are also examining legal options to confiscate properties allegedly acquired through criminal proceeds by the accused.

The Ganjam police have reiterated their commitment to maintaining law and order through sustained and targeted operations against organised crime.
