ECoR GM Inspects Key Rail Projects, Freight Facilities in Western Odisha

Bhubaneswar: East Coast Railway (ECoR) General Manager Parmeshwar Funkwal conducted a detailed inspection of critical infrastructure and traffic facilities across the Sambalpur–Jharsuguda Railway Section in Western Odisha, an official release said on Saturday.
During the visit, Funkwal inspected Jharsuguda Road, Brundamal, Lapanga, and Sarla stations, reviewing ongoing projects and railway sidings crucial for the region’s growing industrial sector.
Key projects under inspection included the BPSL Siding at Lapanga, the Jharsuguda Road Station, the Brundamal–Jharsuguda Flyover, the MAVB Siding at Brundamal, Brundamal Yard, and the newly established Freight Train Examination and Routine Overhauling (ROH) Facility at Sarla Station.
Funkwal, accompanied by Divisional Railway Manager of Sambalpur Division Subash C. Chaudhary and other senior ECoR officials, assessed traffic facilities, infrastructure upgrades, and operational improvements across the section.
A major highlight of the inspection was the Sarla Freight Examination Depot, which is expected to handle 90–100 freight train examinations and 100 wagon overhauls (ROH) each month. The facility is projected to enhance operational efficiency by reducing BTAP wagon turnaround time by 30% and boosting freight handling capacity and safety.
Officials said the new facility would significantly support regional industries — especially steel, aluminum, and coal — contributing to job creation and boosting local economic growth.
Funkwal also emphasized the importance of stronger coordination with industrial stakeholders to maximize operational efficiencies and advance national economic development.
Additionally, he directed officials to focus on improving safety measures across stations and yards, and called for enhanced passenger amenities, including upgraded waiting areas, better lighting, clean drinking water facilities, and clearer signage to ensure a safe and comfortable experience for travellers.
