Depression Over BoB Intensifies Into Deep Depression
Bhubaneswar: The depression that formed over the Bay of Bengal on Monday has intensified into a deep depression and is expected to cross the Odisha coast near Puri around noon, according to the IMD’s bulletin.
The meteorological office reported that the depression moved slowly north-northwestward at a speed of 8 km/h over the past six hours, becoming a deep depression. The system was centred approximately 70 km south-southeast of Puri, Odisha, 140 km east-southeast of Gopalpur, Odisha, 120 km south-southwest of Paradip, Odisha, 170 km south-southwest of Chandbali, Odisha, 240 km east-northeast of Kalingapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, and 290 km south-southwest of Digha, West Bengal.
“It is highly likely to move almost northwestward and cross the Odisha coast near Puri by noon on September 9,” stated the IMD, noting that it will probably continue moving west-northwestward across Odisha and Chhattisgarh over the next two days. A ‘Red alert’ has been issued for five districts in Odisha: Puri, Jagatsinghpur, Khurda, Cuttack, and Dhenkanal. Widespread heavy to very heavy rainfall, ranging from 7 to 20 cm, with isolated instances of extremely heavy rainfall of less than 20 cm, is anticipated in parts of the districts of Puri, Jagatsinghpur, Khurda, Cuttack, and Dhenkanal. Fishermen have been advised to avoid going to sea until September 11.
