CPI(M) Leader Sitaram Yechury Passes Away
New Delhi: Veteran CPI(M) leader Sitaram Yechury passed away on Thursday at the age of 72. The senior politician was admitted to AIIMS New Delhi on August 19 for treatment of a pneumonia-like chest infection.
“Saddened to hear about the passing of Sitaram Yechury, who was a colleague in Parliament with me some years ago. My deepest condolences to his family and supporters,” said former Union Minister and BJP leader Rajeev Chandrasekhar.
Reports citing sources indicated on Wednesday that Yechury was on oxygen support, with his condition being monitored by a multidisciplinary team of doctors. At that time, his condition was described as “critical but stable.”
The CPI(M) issued a statement on Tuesday stating that the veteran leader was receiving treatment for an acute respiratory tract infection in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences.
Yechury was a pillar of the Left movement in India, and his dedication to social justice was steadfast. He was an ardent advocate for the rights of workers, peasants, and marginalized communities. Throughout his life, he vigorously fought against inequality, oppression, and exploitation.
As the General Secretary of the CPI(M), Yechury was instrumental in defining the party’s ideology and strategy. He was an eloquent speaker and a prolific writer, with significant contributions to Marxist theory and practice.
The demise of Yechury creates an irreplaceable gap in Indian politics. Nevertheless, his legacy will endure, continuing to inspire and direct future generations of activists, intellectuals, and political figures.
