CM Mohan Majhi Condemns Burning of Biju Patnaik Statue in Patnagarh, One Held

Bhubaneswar: Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi has strongly condemned the burning of a statue of legendary leader Biju Patnaik at Parshuram Chowk in Patnagarh, Balangir district, calling the act “disgraceful” and suggesting the accused may be “mean and mentally unstable.”

The incident, which took place early Monday morning, has sparked political controversy and public outrage. One person has been arrested so far in connection with the act.

“The state government respects all legendary leaders of Odisha. I personally have deep regard for Biju Babu. The government has always taken steps to honour his legacy,” Majhi said.

The Chief Minister highlighted that Biju Patnaik’s birth anniversary was celebrated at the state level on March 5, and announced that his death anniversary will be observed on April 17.

The burning of the statue comes amid heightened political tension, with the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) accusing the ruling BJP of being behind the incident. The location of the act — Patnagarh — is significant, as it is represented in the Odisha Legislative Assembly by Deputy Chief Minister KV Singhdeo.

Meanwhile, police have launched an investigation to identify more suspects and uncover the motive behind the desecration. Further details are awaited.
